SICS Engages Heads of Department on Strategic Priorities

May 5, 2026

The School of Information and Communication Studies (SICS), University of Ghana, has held a meeting with Heads of Department to discuss key strategic priorities aimed at strengthening the School’s teaching, research, and institutional visibility.

Chaired by the Dean, the meeting outlined a development framework focused on six areas: expansion in academic offerings, scholarship, thought leadership, partnerships/internalisation, branding, and infrastructure development. Plans were highlighted to expand programme offerings, introduce industry-focused short courses, and position the School to deliver consultancy and professional training services.

The Dean also emphasised the need to strengthen the School’s research capacity through improved grant acquisition and collaborative projects across disciplines. Efforts are underway to establish a School-level grants committee and to develop locally relevant teaching and research outputs.

In addition, the School is pursuing strategic partnerships, including ongoing discussions with UNESCO to host a Chair in media and information literacy and safety of journalists.

Members welcomed the initiatives and highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration, as well as enhancing the visibility to extend its impact and attract more opportunities.

The meeting reaffirmed the School of Information and Communication Studies’ commitment to growth, collaboration, and academic excellence, noting that its priority areas are aligned with the strategic priorities of the University of Ghana. In this regard, the Dean emphasised that these priorities, particularly those relating to scholarship, partnerships, visibility, and capacity development, are intended to strengthen research output, enhance institutional impact, and create opportunities for both faculty and postgraduate students.
